In this course, students will develop skills necessary for effective communication in French in a
variety of situations. Situations include the everyday exchange of greetings or other courtesies,
making or responding to introductions or invitations, asking or giving directions, and sharing
information about oneself, one’s family, friends or school, or about special interests such as food, travel and entertainment. There will be emphasis on grammatical structures and vocabulary. Through video, films, and a variety of other media, students will also build their knowledge the people and the country of France and other French speaking areas of the world.

All goals stated in French 1 are expanded in French 2. Emphasis will be on increasing the
student’s ability to function in more varied and complex situations at a higher, more
sophisticated grammatical level. The focus will be on improving pronunciation, grammatical
structure, and expanding vocabulary. Students will continue to study customs, history and
entertainment of the French speaking world.

French III

In this course students will apply communication skills to more complex situations such as
writing a formal letter to a French institution or discussing environmental problems
Emphasis will be on grammar to refine students’ written and oral communication. Much of the
class will be conducted in French. Students will be introduced to literary and cinematic analysis
of French texts.

French IV (Honors)

In this course the students will learn skills needed to enjoy social situations, exchange ideas,
travel or satisfy daily living needs wherever French is spoken. Students will also sharpen their
speaking skills and expository writing. The class will be conducted in French. The course will
focus on specific areas of need or interest, especially literature, cinema, philosophy, and culture.

AP French

The AP French language course is intended for qualified students who are interested in
completing studies comparable in content and difficulty to courses in French composition and
conversation at the third-year college level. The AP Program in French language is for students
who have chosen to develop further their proficiency in all four language skills: listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Students are required to take the AP French language Exam,
which is given in the spring of each year.


Japanese I

Students will learn to talk about themselves (i.e. family, daily routines, school, inviting a friend over) with the use of the basic sentence structures and vocabulary. developing students’ oral-aural skills.

Students taking Japanese V will be entered for the IB Standard Level examination in Japanese as a foreign language. In this course, the students will explore cultural issues as they relate to the individual (daily life, leisure and future plans), Japanese society (living, traveling and cultural
life) and contemporary issues (the impact of technology, environmental, global and social issues) as they relate to Japan. Upon completion of this course, students should recognize the 400 most frequently used kanji. The student will be asked to read authentic materials on a regular basis. A strong emphasis will be placed on developing students’ oral-aural skills.

* The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a program of study that is recognized by the
universities and colleges of over 157 countries as representing college level work. Students
taking the IB Japanese examination will earn an IB certificate and college credit if he/she
performed at a satisfactory level. Parents wishing to know more about this program should

This course is designed to increase the proficiency of the students in the four language skills:
listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing the student’s
active vocabulary. Students will develop these skills by taking part in oral presentations, class
discussions and debates. This course will also work towards developing better skills in reading
and writing. The students will read newspaper articles, short stories in the target language as
well as write essays on selected topics. The class materials are designed to work toward fluency in communication.

The students will learn to look at these texts from an analytical point of view as well as understand the concepts and theories within the mode of analysis. The student will develop skills that they will be able to apply to everyday usage of the Spanish language.

cultural perspectives (its attitudes values and beliefs) of Chinese speaking countries to their own
cultural perspectives. Approximately 200 characters will be taught.

Students should be able to master approximately 400 Hanzi, with their simplified Chinese equivalents.
