English 7 is a year-long required English
course consisting of four strands or areas of learning: literature,
vocabulary, grammar, and writing. Students strive to become
literate readers and writers through vocabulary development,
an understanding and application of grammar rules, using
the writing process proficiently, and developing reading
strategies.
Literature: Novel studies, poetry, short story selections,
and drama are the focus. Books choices include historical
fiction novels such as Johnny Tremain, Parallel Journeys,
Farewell to Manzanar, and other titles. The Literature Circle
method of instruction is used for novels read in class. Students
are also responsible for reading independently at home and
completing activities related to those novels using their
creative and academic talents. The Language of Literature
(McDougal Littell) textbook/anthology will be used.
Vocabulary: Words are selected from SAT, literature, and
team vocabulary lists. Using words correctly in context is
evaluated.
Grammar: Students examine the structure of the English language
using the text, Voyages in English-7. Parts of speech, usage,
and mechanics are emphasized.
Writing: Understanding and applying the steps of the writing
process is the focus of the writing program. These steps
include: brainstorming ideas, planning, writing a rough draft,
editing, producing a final copy, and sharing with an audience.
Student work includes writing paragraphs, essays (narrative,
expository, descriptive, and persuasive), a research paper,
and poetry.
Special Projects: Projects will be completed each semester
in correlation with the history and science classes.
