COURSE DESCRIPTION
World History records the adventures of humankind – both the famous and the ordinary – throughout thousands of years.  By studying world history – by gazing across time – you can understand the past and recognize its contribution to the present and the future.  World history is a story of people and events.  It encompasses broad historical themes that happen again and again, providing meaning for events in the past and showing how they affect contemporary life.


INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

At the end of this course, students will……….

  • have maintained an Explorer’s Journal, a personal book of discovery
  • be able to make connections between what they read and what they already know
  • answer key guiding questions related to Geography, History, Culture, Government and Economics
  • demonstrate an understanding of key historical themes


COURSE SCHEDULE

Studying the Ancient World is a huge task.  We will make that task easier by focusing on five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and regions. 

We will begin the year studying Pre-Man period and the Beginnings of Human Society.  We will also cover the fertile crescent before units on the following:

  • Mesopotamia
  • Ancient Egypt
  • Ancient India
  • Ancient China
  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Rome

           

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:
During the first few days of school, the 6th graders have reviewed the Middle School Handbook, the Four Agreements, lunch room procedures, and locker and recess procedures.  In addition, students have learned about the discipline Levels and are aware of the referral process.

Grading Policies:
After an excused absence, students should turn in all assignments upon their return to school.  Homework is due at the beginning of the class period.  After two school days, late assignments will not be accepted for credit.

Grading Scale:
Tests/Projects:  50%                              Quizzes:            20%
Class work:       10%                              Homework:        20%
