TALK AND LISTEN
Active Listening

Active listening involves:

         ~Acknowledging the person who is speaking
           with full attention and eye contact.

         ~Withholding one’s own comments, opinions,
           and need to talk at the time.

         ~Paraphrasing key words to encourage the speaker
           and to let them know they have been heard.

         ~Affirming through body language that the speaker
           is being heard.

         ~Paying attention not only to the words, but also
           to the feelings behind the words.

Active listening skills to be taught and consciously practiced:
         * Attending
                    Listening silently with full attention
         * Non-verbal encouragement
                    Nodding, smiling, “uh-huh”
         * Paraphrasing
                    “ Am I understanding you correctly?...”
                    “ So, you’re saying... ?”
                    “ Let me be sure I heard what you just said....”
          * Reflecting feelings
                    “So, you’re feeling ...?”
                    “It sounds like you’re feeling...”
         * Asking questions
                    “What do you mean by __________________?”
                    “Can you be more specific?”
                    “Tell me more about that.”
                    “How do you feel about that?”
                     “How so?”
                     “In what way?”
                     Repeating back what the person said in a questioning tone.
