Second Grade Library

During weekly visits to the library students are exposed to a variety of literary genre and non-fiction forms including tall tales and biographies and recognize, through class discussion, how learning about others helps in the understanding of themselves and those around them. Students are especially encouraged to draw the point of the story into their own life experience. Students also respond to literature through, art, writing and dramatization. Throughout the year the literature that is shared with students during story times reflects and extends the curriculum in the classroom and/or helps to illustrate the monthly character qualities.

In second grade students begin to use simple tools for information retrieval and can identify parts of a book. Students can locate the fiction and non-fiction sections in the library and are introduced to biographies and autobiographies.

In conjunction with classroom teachers, students use library resources and apply skills in organizing, interpreting and evaluating information to form simple reports.

Library visits always include time for students to browse the collection to choose a book. This independent choice is an important step towards the encouragement of life-long learning and the pursuit of individual interests.
