French Curriculum

Le Jardin has an early start/long duration approach for the instruction of the French language. Students are exposed to the French language through authentic activities such as songs, nursery rhymes, lullabies, finger plays, poems, folk dances, stories and games. All activities are conducted in the target language. At this young age, the students are focusing on the theme "myself" which covers topics such as body parts, clothing, pets, housing, food and holidays.

The emphasis at this point of their development is more on comprehension than expression which explains the intensive TPR (Total Physical Response) where the student has to respond physically to an oral command.  For the vocabulary development, the accent is on colors, numbers and body parts.  The instruction is task-oriented.  The culture is shared through anecdotes, stories and videos.

Pre-Kindergarten students attend French twice a week for 15 minutes and Junior Kindergarteners attend twice a week for 25 minutes. A newsletter distributed three times a year (September, January, March) keeps families informed of the French curriculum, projects and events.
